The 3 Day Crayfish Trail has been designed to suit anyone looking for an escape from the rat race of one’s daily routine. We have built the perfect 2-night getaway which allows you to feel like you have been away for a week. The trail includes hiking in the Rocherpan Nature Reserve, along pristine beaches, exploring caves with rock art and interacting with local people. One gets just a taste of the full 5 Day Trail. Please note that we embrace the notion of ‘slow living’, allowing one to take time and enjoy the finer things in life. Our itinerary shifts slightly depending on weather, season and availability. The trail requires guests to be moderately fit and is suitable for families (children above 12). We require a minimum of 4 and have a maximum of 12 guests

Day of Arrival

Check-in from 14h00 at either Rocherpan Nature Reserve or Vensterklip Guest Farm (depending on availability) which are both iconic venues. You will have the afternoon to settle in, and explore your surroundings. Guests will be treated to a home-cooked meal prepared by your host.

Day 2- 7.5 KM
Guests will meet their guide and be ready to depart for the morning hike. A simple continental breakfast is served before beginning the morning walk. We allow for 2.5 hours on this leg of the Crayfish Trail. Wind your way through beautiful single track and wooden paths hedged by fynbos, alongside pan to the lookout point. We then return along the beach and back to your overnight accommodation.

Guests enjoy lunch and explore the farm and Verlorenvlei which is a protected wetland and Important Bird and Biodiversity Area (IBA). There is an optional walk to ‘The Vensterklip’. We then explore the small fishing and surfing town of Elands Bay. Your guide will show you Baboon Point, a provincial heritage site, along with the caves and rock art left by the San. Enjoy a sunset over the Atlantic Ocean, coupled with a beer tasting with a selection of Darling Brew’s very best. For those who prefer wine, we also have an alternative wine and chocolate pairing ensemble in the evening.

Enjoy an 9 km hike along the beach and into the town of Lamberts Bay. Entering the town on foot gives one a unique welcome and feel for this one-of-a- kind coastal town. Your guide will lead you to Bird Island which is one of six sites in the world where Cape Gannets breed (and the only breeding site which is easily accessible to the public).

Guests will be introduced to local fishers at the harbor and hear more about the fishing sector from the people who are involved. This is also a chance to hear about the Abalobi initiative, which engages technology for social justice and to alleviate poverty. Lunch at one of Lamberts Bay’s iconic restaurants (the seafood basket is highly recommended). The day should wrap up around 13h30 a with transport provided back to the starting point of the trail.
Guests will be transported back to their vehicles. Alternatively, a transfer must be pre-arranged with the organisers. Return to Cape Town between 16h00 – 17h00.

Route 1: Hike from Elands Bay Steenbokfontein: distance of 18 km
Guests will meet their guide and be ready to depart for the morning hike to Steenbokfontein. A hearty breakfast is served before beginning the morning walk. We allow for 4 hours on this leg of the Crayfish Trail. Guests hike along the idyllic and seemingly endless beaches, often without another soul around. There is an option to walk on the dirt road if the sand is too soft. Look forward to vista’s of the Strandveld while keeping a look-out for small game which inhabit the area. We include a tractor ride to the famous Steenbokfontein caves where you will learn about the history of the farm as well as hunter-gatherers which lived here.

Route 2: Hike from Steenbokfontein to Lamberts Bay: distance of 12 km

Guests will meet their guide and be ready to depart for the morning hike to Steenbokfontein. A hearty breakfast is served before beginning the morning walk. We allow for 3 hours on this leg of the Crayfish Trail. Guests hike along the beach past the famous Muisbosskerm and enter the charming town of Lamberts Bay. Guests are treated to a guided tour around Bird Island, one of 6 sites in the world where Cape Gannets breed (and the only breeding site which is easily accessible to the public). A highlight on this trip is hearing from local fishers at the harbor about the Abalobi initiative which is using technology to empower small-scale fishers.

The hike will depart around 09h00, depending on overnight venue. The route follows a single track path with renosterveld and fynbos to your right. To your left is the open expanse of the Atlantic Ocean. This is stretch of hiking is truly spectacular! Guests are treated to lunch and a wine tasting at the iconic Fryers Cove cellar and Jetty restaurant. The combination of fantastic wine, good food and ocean vista’s, how can you go wrong?We include a tour around the Abalone farm where guests learn about these intriguing mollusks. Following lunch, guests are transported back to their vehicles by 14h00. Alternatively, a transfer must be pre-arranged with the organisers.

Your days are spent slack-packing on diverse types of terrain including sandy beaches, fynbos paths, jeep tracks, single track paths, and simply finding your way alongside river banks. Guests are treated to the best of what the West Coast has to offer including interacting with local communities, comfortable accommodation, tasty food and unique wines. This being a slackpacking trail, all you need with you is a day-pack and camera. When guests arrive at their destination at the end of a lovely day your luggage will be waiting for you. The trail requires guests to be moderately fit. It is suitable for families (children above 12). A support vehicle will be on standby, however we stagger days to have some longer distances followed by shorter more activity based days.

Rocherpan Nature Reserve – Draaihoek lunch


For those early risers this is a great opportunity to watch the sunrise – mornings on the West Coast are magical! Guests are encouraged to enjoy a walk to the bird or visit the beach which is just a stone’s throw away from your accommodation. A simple breakfast will be served, following which guests will need to be ready to meet their guide and depart for their days hiking. Guests get their first experience of the empty beaches and fresh Atlantic air. Highlights include South Africa’s very first Provincial Heritage Site called Baboon Point. Your guide will show you to the cave where there is evidence of San hunter-gatherers and Khoekhoe descendants which, according to lead archaeologist, Professor John Parkington “date back as far as 100 000 years and as recently as 300 years ago”. From the caves, guests will be shown the old Crayfish Factory and hear about some of the history and politics of the local fishing industry.



Your guide will then show you to your accommodation where guests can relax and enjoy a well-deserved sundowner.

Guests will once again need to be ready to meet their guide and be set to depart at 08h00. Another steady day’s walking lies ahead. One gets to see where the name ‘Crayfish Trail’ comes from as there are often many carcasses washed up on the beach. Be sure to ask your guide why! This route takes you alongside a number or bays where one can see the abundance of life along the rocky sea shore. Have a look to see if you can see the kelp forests.

Early rise to catch the shuttle for a short drive (45 km) through the Strandveld. The hike starts in the small town of Doring Bay. Soon you will be on a particularly scenic path along the cliff tops to Strandfontein and then on to Papendorp. To your left stretches the vast expanse of the blue Atlantic Ocean, and to your right there will be a myriad of wild flowers and fynbos. In the distance, the Olifants River beckons, its water a welcoming sight to any hiker. Follow an adventurous and sometimes muddy path along the Olifants River bank and discover the beauty of this estuarine ecosystem.
